Herman Schneider
Herman Schneider was a titan among the pioneering custom knifemakers of the 1970s, renowned for setting new benchmarks in craftsmanship. While popularly recognized for creating the iconic spiked dagger for the 1986 film Cobra, Schneider’s true legacy lies in his impeccable "fit and finish." As noted by collector Phil Lobred, Schneider’s work effectively "lifted the industry up two notches," earning him a place among the elite at the Art Knife Invitational (AKI).
Schneider’s style evolved from functional hunters and skinners to exquisite art knives and Michael Price-style dress bowies, often featuring complex grinds that few peers could replicate. Beyond his technical mastery, he was a pillar of the community, helping organize the California Custom Knife Show and maintaining close ties with legends like Buster Warenski.
