Ron Lake
Tail lock folder
This piece is a quintessential example of Ron Lake's signature style. Its most defining feature is the tail-lock mechanism, a small lever at the very end of the handle, which differs from conventional lock releases.
This precision mechanism set new standards for quality in handmade knives. The entire piece serves as a canvas for the detailed engraving by artist Ray Cover Jr., transforming an already exceptional tool into a unique, ornament-like work of art. With an overall length of just 8.1 cm, its compact form highlights the incredible precision of its construction.
He also invented the "Tail-Lock," a small lever at the end of the handle that makes the knife much safer and easier to close. These innovations were so significant that he received a U.S. patent for them in 1974.
Lake’s work signaled the beginning of a new era for "art cutlery," where a knife's decorative beauty is as important as its engineering. Each piece, often unique and very difficult to acquire, is regarded as a fine ornament.
