Rick eaton began scrimshawing in 1979 and made some buckskinner knives in 1982. He started engraving in 1983 and began making handmade knives in 1984 after learning from his father. In 1993, he became a full-time knifemaker and engraver, leaving his job as an operating engineer. He has been a voting member of the Knifemakers Guild since 1997.

He creates all types of knives, but he prefers one-of-a-kind art pieces, especially art folders and art daggers. His folders include several models with a step-down on the handle front, making them look like fixed blades. The locking-liner and sidelock knives open with one hand, using the back edge of the blade, which is hidden when the knife is open for a cleaner look. Sidelock folders are milled from a single piece for strength.
