Robert Waldorf Loveless, known as RW Loveless or Bob Loveless, was a highly influential custom knife maker. Born in Warren, Ohio, he developed an early interest in knives while hunting with his grandfather. At 14, he joined the merchant marine and later served in the Air Corps, where he became fascinated by knives again after witnessing knife fights.

 

In the 1950s, he began making his own knives, initially based on Randall Made Knives. He created the “Delaware Maids” for Abercrombie & Fitch, which became their top-selling handmade item. Loveless innovated with the full-tapered-tang method for stronger knives and pioneered the use of new materials like 154CM steel and Micarta. He was a founding member of the Knifemaker’s Guild and made knives for special forces, while also designing for companies like Gerber and Beretta.
